Painting Tips

Surface preparation is especially important for repainting projects as most of the problems are caused by faulty surface conditions, inadequate preparation and moisture entry.

Check exterior walls for leaks, stains, cracks and possible sources or signs of water seepage. If any of these are present, patching and repainting is recommended. Start by cleaning the surface with soap and water. Use hose and scrub to remove mud and silt from the wall.

Voids / Nicks / Cracks

Putty small cracks with the following:

• BOYSEN^®Acrytex™ Cast #1711 for exterior
• BOYSEN^® Masonry Putty #7311 for interior

Apply corrective civil works for larger cracks.

Peeling /Flaking

Remove all loose, scaling, flaking and peeling off paint.

Cut a small cross-section in the old paint with a sharp blade. Apply masking tape over it and then remove; if the old paint comes off, the old paint film needs to be stripped. Sand down edges to even the surface.

Chalking

For chalking old paint, cover all areas with one (1) layer of BOYSEN^® Chalk Blocker™ #7304. Let dry for two (2) hours before applying the topcoat.

Molds and Mildew

Treat mildew growth with disinfectants or a 1:3 solution of laundry bleach to water, respectively. Let stay for twenty-four (24) hours then wash off residue with water. Allow all cleaned surfaces to dry before painting.
